Porsche Rennsport Reunion IV

18 10 2011

Porsche Rennsport Reunion at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca was awesome! The Paddock was fill with hundreds of Porsche’s as far as the eye could see. Every generation and model was represented, from historic race car’s to today’s modern supercar. Porsche even shipped out some historic cars from their museum in Stuttgart. One being my one of my favorite race cars of all time, the 1998 Porsche 911 GT1 LM. They even showed off their 918 RSR Hybrid race car and the new 2012 911!

There was so much to see and do, I felt torn on what to do all day. I went between pressing up against the fences along the track to get as close as possible to watch the the cars scream around the track, and drooling over the finest Porsche’s in the world on the concourse. Just walking around the parking lot through a sea of Porsche’s, while the sound of GT3 RSR Cup cars racing filled the air made it pure automotive bliss. Words can’t explain…

The fact that I got to see cars in person and in some cases touch (Don’t tell Porsche!). Cars that I’ve only idolized about since I was a kid. The closest I’ve gotten before was watching old clips, and playing with them in video games. I was a big kid in a candy shop… a candy shop of AWESOMENESS! Seriously though, I had the biggest smile on my face all day. Makes me want that 993 Turbo even more.. oh how i aspire to own one someday.

If you are a car nut like me, you HAVE to go to the next Rennsport Reunion, you won’t be disappointed!

Gonna split this into 2 parts, too much awesome!

Formula DRIFT Round 7: Title Fight

11 10 2011

My first time to Toyota Speedway at Irwindale aka the “House of Drift”, and was it crazy! It was one of the biggest drift events I’ve been ever been to, the grandstands were packed with thousands of drift crazy fans.

The drivers performed quite a show, pulling out all the stops as the championship title was coming down to the wire. They pushed their skills, and cars to the limit, and it shows by the amount of cars claimed by the walls of Irwindale. There was so much drama, it was like watching a soap opera, you didn’t know what to expect. The championship came down to the last few races to determine a winner. When the smoke settled, Daijiro Yoshihara and his Discount Tires S13 was 2011 Formula Drift Champion, his first. Dai’s been around forever as far as professional drifting in American is concerned. He is one of my favorite drifters, and its good to finally see him win! Well Deserved!

Tyler McQuarrie and his Falken 350z took first place at the house of drift. Which I believe was his first event win in Formula Drift. Tyler being from Northern California automatically makes me a fan of his! I love his style of drifting, always laying on the throttle letting that v8 sing and going 110% every time. He shreds Falken’s like nobody else. His nickname is “The Rock” but I’m calling him “Smoke” from now on.

Slammed Society by Fatlace also but on a small carshow in the back of the paddock. Which was cool seeing alot of different cars I don’t usually see. Love it or hate it, low offset wheels, “hella flush” , and stance are here to stay. To me I still loved the days when making your car fast was the thing to do. Now its about looking fast, and slammed.. so be it. Zero engine and performance mods, but Bling bling low-offset rims + spacer’s, and a slam and call it a day. No, I’m not hating, I just miss the old days. Some cars are tastefully done though, and credit is due where it’s earned.

Like I said this was one of the biggest and badass drift events I’ve been to, I really hope this is the future of drifting. I had a total blast and I’m ready for the 2012 season to start! *cough* COME BACK TO SONOMA! *cough*. One thing I love about Formula Drift, is the interaction with drivers and the fans. They are all very approachable, and don’t mind talking and interacting wit the fans. Chris Forsberg, and Ryan Tuerck were sitting next to us watching the action on the track and inhaling tire smoke. They are just normal car guys like all of us in the end.Again congrats to Dai! Can’t wait for next season!

*note all my pics where taken from the grandstands, I was on vacation to watch drifting. hahaha!

Blox Open House 2011

14 06 2011

I missed last years Blox Open House, so I knew I had to attend Blox Open House 2011. I wasn’t exactly sure what to expect from this event, but I knew it had to be pretty big if I heard promotions for it on our local radio station Wild949. Blox opened their facility to everyone and cars from all makes and models, from daily drivers to Super Street Magazine cover cars. All day the lot seemed to be packed with people and some of the Bay Areas finest food trucks were there to keep everyone fed. Everything seemed to run pretty smooth, no drama, everyone just seemed they were enjoying the event.

Walked around for awhile checked out all of the cars, and talked to all the “usual suspects”. To tell you the truth, I wasn’t planning on spending my whole day there but I did. I always seem to see old friends and end up talking forever…. next thing i know the show was over. Thinking, maybe I should try to keep in touch with people more often.

Anyways,I was really checking out this white CRX in particular powered by H2B (H series with B series Trans), got me thinking maybe I should go in a different direction with my Civic as far as power plant goes. Another car that caught my eye was Ernesto Jr’s Red 5.0 Mustang. I always wanted a Red 5.0 , and growing up, my older cousin had one. It was, and still is one of my dream cars, weird but very true. I guess it brings back memories of when I was a kid being raised with domestic cars, and spending countless weekends at the drag strip with my family.

Thanks to Blox for putting this on, it was pretty generous of you guys.

Enjoy

4.13.2011 Sonoma DRIFT Exibition

3 05 2011

I know its super late , but here is my coverage of the Sonoma Drift exhibition at Infineon Raceway held on April 13th 2011. Drifting , Drag Racing, and Car Show all at the same place and the same time. I really hope they make this a regular event as drifting events where people can practice up here in Northern California, as places/events are far and few between. It was a good mix of professional and amateur drifters that made quite a show.

Notable drifter(s) Matt Field, brought his LSx powered S14, and Calvin Wan brought out his venerable FD Rx7. The sound of a 13b screaming down the track still brings a smile to my face, its just an amazing sound. I thought this one WRX in particular was quite interesting, because it was converted to RWD. I have seen similarly setup cars in videos from Japan, but this is the first I have seen in person. Also the flat black GS300 powered by a LSx was one of my favorites, show and go in the same package.

It was also my first trip of the season to the Wednesday night drags, hope to scrap my car together for a few runs this summer. Yea, drag racing might not be the flavor anymore, but its one of my first passions, and i still LOVE it.

Had a great time at the event, and hope there is more to come!
